Shanghaied in Beijing
Socialism with Chinese Characteristics - the official euphemism for Capitalism in Communist China circa 1995. A staggeringly rapid rate of change of economic policies, growth which preciptated a cultural vacuum. That vacuum, and what fills it, will veritably determine the lives of 1.2 billion (and growing) people.
This is what I want to hear more of on dublit. Your reading is well paced and the inflection keeps the listener attentive. I also like the story, It feels like I'm getting a glimpse into international trouble. (West Point cadets are less scary than juvenile offenders released into foreign lands.) I want to hear another story about how people (like the Capitan) come to believe seemingly inconsistent things (like how the economy in China isnt really capitalism, but socialism with Chinese characteristics). The story ends a little abruptly, like part of it got cut off.
